The track is made out of strong Plastic and it fits 1/4" glass or any other 1/4" stock you want to use.
The spaces in the light guard are 3/4" at the top and 1 1/2" at the widest point. The collar diameter is 1 1/2".
The guard works well for my bigger boas.
Now for my smaller and baby boas I add metal window screen around it. The screen does get hot but I can touch the screen and not get burned. As for the lights I use fluorescent lights and they do not get hot.
