hedgehog care
There are a few things you will need to know before making your purchase. Hedgehogs are nocturnal and some can get irate if woken up during the day. When they are upset, angry or frightened they roll up in a ball and erect their quills and may stick you with them by jerking. If you have small children, this may not be the ideal pet to own.
Housing-
You will first need to have an adequate size. An aquarium will work as long as there is plenty of room and ventilation. A 20 gallon should do the trick, these guys like to run. You can add some safe toys like a rubber squeaky ball and excercise wheel for example. You should always make sure you have a screen top to keep him in, and other things out. You should also provide a hiding place for your new friend, as a secure haven. They can reach a size of 5-8 inces in length.
Litter box-
A small shallow pan with dust free cat litter can be provided and may become the hedgehogs primary bathroom area.
Bedding-
aspen shavings or newer alternatives to wood shavings can be used, but avoid cedar shavings
Food-
Hedgehogs are insectivores and will eat mealworms and crickets. Small amounts of hardboiled egg, baby foods or fruit can be given as occasional treats. Treats should be fed in moderation only. You will also need to provide hedgehog food, which is specially formulated for the little guys.
Bathing-
They do a fairly good job of grooming themselves but sometimes, they do need help. If you wish, you can bath your hedgehog a couple of times a year. Just fill the sink with approx. 1 in luke warm water. add a couple drops of cat shampoo, and place him gently in the water, and wet him thorougly by scooping water from the sink with a cup onto his back. You may use a tooth brush to gently clean his spines. Keep the water and soap out of his eyes. When this is done, drain the dirty water and refill the tub with another inch of water, and gently rinse him, and towel dry. Just make sure you keep him away from cool drafts.
Hedgehogs have a life span of 3-8 years.
