It's terrible, but this story and John's lovely pic actually remind me of something kinda tragic that happened this past November...
I was visiting my mom's home back in Cincy when I noticed some kids outside messing with something crawling on the sidewalk next to the road...It was a baby squirrel, too young to leave the nest, ridden with fleas, and very weak. Much like the one in the above story...So, of course, I drop what I'm doing, take the little guy and made him a bed in a shoebox, run to a petshop and buy kitten formula (this works as a sub) with a bottle and take this squirrel,
bottle-feed him around-the-clock for 2 days, and he really seems to be coming around, moving fast, alert, tries to climb up my arm...things are looking good...
So then, the next day I have to make the trip back out here to VA, I found a wildlife rescue I was going to take him to (as much fun as it would be to raise a squirrel, I don't have the time or space), and I take him and his shoebox, set them on the couch as I run into the kitchen for literally 15 seconds, come back, and...EXACTLY as in the pic above, one of my Mom's little mini-Dachsunds jumped up (I didn't even know he was in the house

), stuck his nose in that box, and wham, took the little guy's head clean off...It truly was really sad...
But I did reason it out in the long run...He very well may have made a great meal for a big Black Rat snake anyway...I'm still mad at that dog though...He's so bad!
Oh, and Stargazer, I apologize for countering your beautiful and heartwarming squirrel-dog story with my much less-cute one...But it did bring back memories...
