The visual impairemnet trick works for many genus other than reptiles. If you have a barky dog try putting your hand gently over their eyes, instant attention... (don't try with foreign animals) I think it has something to do with the fact that you have asserted dominance by removing the ability for them to see.

When my ferrets were very young they would nip CONSTANTLY. We used the "hand over the eyes" training to rid them of that (stuff hates having their eyes covered) It also only inflicts mental discomfort rather than flipping thier ears (I wouldn't want someone whopping on my ears, in fact it would make me want to bite harder...)
