Re: New to Boas: Considering a Red Tail / Colombian – Seeking Advice
For what it's worth, I'm about 4 months into my first experience with a BCI (common boa constrictor, not "true red-tail") and she has been wonderful. She was a bit nippy for the first week and then quickly settled down into the routine of handling, feeding, cleaning, etc. I absolutely recommend them for someone who is willing to put in the time and effort to care for what will eventually be a big snake.
The one thing I can suggest, that I wish I had done, is get one from a reputable breeder. I had a bad experience with a local breeder and ended up getting mine from a pet store (wish I had found redtailboa.net earlier). The problem with that was I don't have any records on her, I don't know her lineage - she's most likely a mut, and soon after bringing her home I discovered the mites - but thats a whole other story. If you buy from one of the good breeders you can find on this site, you won't have any of these problems.
Thats my two cents, but I don't consider myself an expert by any means. There are quite a few on here though, and they are good people to get advice from.
Cheers
Andy
