You got a corporate shill to agree they should file a claim with their insurance? I'm not trying to take anything away from the anguish you must have felt, but this is hardly a moral victory. I've been the corporate shill before...shocked and horrified is the only appropriate response in such a situation, and I could fake it with the best of them. This guy isn't heartbroken or considering quitting, he's just taking the next call and figuring out which fake emotion it calls for, if he's any good at his job. He even got you to do the job of calling the store, and stuck them with filing the claim with their insurance company, who will then subrograte the claim to the manufacturer's insurance company, failing to even cause a ripple, as far as PetCo is concerned. When you get the call from the insurance company, politely mention that you're considering seeking damages in the amount of... dun dun dun...just slightly less than whatever the small claims limit is in your state. It's cheaper for them to settle than it is to show up and win. They will try to negotiate, but when pressed, will settle.
