Re: Favorite snake to keep?
I kept a large (7') banded Egyptian cobra for a couple of years back in the day. It and a few other things like that belonged to a friend who was unavailable to care for them...
.
I'm not speaking of Egyptian cobras (or any hot snake) in general as being favourite snakes or good pets because they are not! THIS particular snake ranks as my all-time favourite snake-in-a-cage.
.
The snake was active and extremely intelligent.. used every part of the cage. The varied shapes and sizes and colors of the scales on him added a depth of interest to the snake not matched by many snakes. Though deadly and I always treated it with that respect ... there was never a sense of imminent danger or lack of control..
.
The only drawback was the near daily cleaning that goes with keeping an animal like this.. installing a latching cage separator is the answer I used to make the routine stuff like cleaning go quickly with zero risk. For me, in a non-venomous snake the only thing that comes close to that animal is a large well-adjusted tropical Drymarchon sp..
.
Now.. the Black forest cobras and East African mambas! .. that is a different story all together!
.
Good topic.
