As with most fossorial species, it is not so much the substrate that gives them comfort as the contact. You can usually put a folded paper towel in the feeding enclosure and get the same response as if you put them in sand. This phenomenon is well demonstrated in many snakes who are notorious for hiding in substrate by adding a piece of Plexiglas for them to crawl under. Even though it is clear, the contact makes them feel secure.
