Re: Sand Boa advie pls....
Researching the actual terra that most East African Sand Boas are found on, by contacting national parks in both Kenya and Tanzania, I learned that "Sand Boas" are most often found in loose soil with little sand in its make up.
That said I did keep my East African Sand Boas in play sand for a time and fed them in their enclosures. I am sure that anyone who has done this can attest to the fact that you will find sand in their feces. It was my mentioning this fact to Morti in a chat and his pointing out that I could be endangering my “big worms”, as he called them, that lead to me doing further research on the subject.
I would not consider keeping my Eryx colubrinus on a pure sand substrate again though it could be that their systems have adapted to pass sand and soil through their systems.
I now use a mix of roughly 80% fine soil, screened and sifted, combined with roughly 20% play sand. I also no longer feed them in their enclosures either, though getting them to feed in a separate substrate free enclosure was a chore.
I would also not be willing to keep them on any wood chip substrate if I were feeding in the enclosure as I have never seen any evidence that such a large substrate could pass through their system.
