Its pretty typical for most amphibians to eat pretty much anything that they can catch and will fit in their mouths, which is why it is so important to get animals as close to the same size as possible if you're going to make them share space. I've never heard of it specifically with red eyes before, but green tree frogs will do it, almost all aquatic frogs will do it, all species of toad will gladly cannibalize if they can... I don't see why red eyes wouldn't too. Sorry for your loss, it sucks, but as they say **it happens.
