While having a monitor regurgitate upon a door being opened is definitely an
extreme case, I'm amazed you've never heard of defensive regurgitation in captive monitors before. It's very common. The forums are full of posts of people who have just bought their first monitor and want to know why it keeps regurgitating every time they pick it up. It doesn't have to be wild caught monitors, either. The hatchling monitors my pair produces will regurgitate if you handle them on a feeding day (or defecate if you handle them a day later

). As a consequence, I wait until they are accustomed to the presence of people before I do anything with them.
