Here's the camera focusing range:
Normal mode: 19.7" - infinity (0.5m - infinity)
Macro mode: 7.9" - infinity (0.2m - infinity)
Super Macro Mode: 2.8" - 19.7" (7cm - 50cm)

You just need to know how to select the macro or Super Macro function.
Page 12 of the basic manual says you just need to push the button with the little tulip pic. That's macro. Push it again for super. You'll probably have to select it every time you use the camera.
BTW if you have snakes in glass tanks and want cage pics, put the lens against the glass to steady it and prevent glare from the flash on the glass.
