Bearded Dragon all the way!! I personally dont think there is a better beginner lizard. They have great personallities and are typically completly non agressive.
I had one a while ago (has since passed on) that I took to Seattle with me (about 2.5 hours drive 1 way) and walked around Seattle all day and drove home with her on my shoulder. She loved the attention (and so did I).
Beardies are awsome beginner pets. Warning though. Once you own your first reptile you will eventually want more.... Just make sure the Kids is either into Cars or reptiles (or whatever else) not both!!! I have a large reptile collection and my race car. consummes a lot of time and $$$$$
