Ok.. I am snake-sitting some snakes for Cap'n Morgan here. We have a king, 2 boas, an argie of his here since September when he left the service and moved back north to Maine. The day after he dropped off the snakes one of his boas got out and my hubby found it just wandering around and put it in the only empty cage, which just happened to be his anyways. The snakes are in them dang critter keeper/breeder type cages btw. Have I said that I really detest those types of cages , especially for snakes yet .. UGH. Anyways... After the first one escaped from it's cage, we placed bungy cords on the cages to keep the covers from being able to be opened by the snakes at all..or so we thought they wouldn't be able to open them at all..arghh. About 3 or 4 weeks ago one of them , yeah the same one, managed to get out of the cage np even with what we had done to the cage cover to secure it..arghh. These are about 5-6' boas btw that are escaping. When we discovered the snake missing from the cage, the cover was still intact, bungy cords and all. I am still trying to figure out how the heck the snake managed to get out of that cage even and the cage is still covered and locked up even. I didn't have any other empty cages atm , so the snakes had to stay in their own cages for the time being. We just added more bungy cording to the covers and placed logs across the top to try and secure it more so was all. That seemed to work in keeping them from getting out of the cage.
Of course two days ago I was feeding snakes including Capn's, minus the one that is still awol that is even. I placed the snake into a feeding tote and he still hadn't eaten when I left [ reptiles are housed away from my home btw ]. So I placed a concrete block on top of the cage and left it for over nite to see if he would eat during that time. [ I do this a lot with snakes that don't eat right away..leaving them in feeding totes over nite that is ..AND never have an escape from doing such either].
Weeel of course the first thing I noticed when I went back the next day was that there was now a hole in the screening of the top of of the tote lid that this boa was in. NONE of my snakes have ever been able to get out of that screen top at till ever ! I have had this tote for years and never had a problem like this when using it at all. I have even fed and left 8' boas in it over nite np also before. Of course we found the rat that was being fed to the snake gone also from the tote. So now we have a recently fed snake that has managed to escape..ARGHHHH. WONDERFUL!!
Of course I freaked, now this is two snakes of someone else's that i am watching that have managed to escape..UGH. We started looking EVERYWHERE for the snake. I doubted that we would find it even also. I have never actually been able to find an awol snake when looking for it in the past. They always seem to just show up when we are not looking for them actively is the case. We have drop ceilings with them panel things in place where the reptiles are kept. So that makes for lots of lovely hiding places for them to get into btw. My husband took the ceiling to look through and me and the kids that were with me took everywhere else to look. About a half hour later my hubby yells that he has found a snake.. YEA !! Of course it is up in the ceiling area and has wrapped itself nicely around some piping up there..UGH. It took about another 1/2 hour in order to get the snake unwrapped and down from the ceiling. Is really quite a feat when your standing on a ladder and the snake is wrapped around a pipe that is like 3' above you still even and keeps wrapping itself around with it's other end while your working on one ened of unwrapping ..LOL. [ NOTE: buy another ladder for future use so that two people can work on unwrapping an awol snake that is in the ceiling lol].
Now the opnly problem is that I have found one of the awol snakes but I haven't a clue which one it is actually. I do not know Ryan's snakes very well and can not tell them apart easily at all. So I am clueless as to which one this actually is even. Seems to be the one that just ate though, BUT I am possibly just "seeing" a prey bulge in the snake as it had eaten 24 hours previously and I could be mistaken if it is indeed a feeding bulge I am looking at or the snake's girth is all..UGH.
So we have one of them back oin captivity atm...AND it is now being housed in one of my empty 55 gallon?? tanks that I had available when we found the snake. [ I had just been moving snakes around and emptied that tank/cage the previous evening even] The cover has two HUGE HEAVY concrete cylinder blocks on top of the cage.. one at each end of it even. The snake has been of course trying to get out , but he is not going to be able to I am sure of now..hehe. My 9'ers can't even move them concrete blocks at all...AND this snake is about 5-6' range.
I sent Ryan an email and told him that if he ever buys another one of them dang critter/breeder type cages again.. I'm a gunna kill him LOL j/k of course.
Now we just need to find the other awol boa of his too.
