Yeah, they are what I would call the ultimate reference set for a vet that knows little about herps. There are 3 volumes.
"The biology, husbandry, and health care of reptiles" by Lowell Ackerman, DVM.
Volume I - The biology of reptiles
Volume II - The Husbandry of reptiles
Volume III - The Healthcare of reptiles
You can find them all at Amazon.com, sometimes even used. The reading is pretty heavy, but if you have a bio degree, it shouldn't be too bad.
Vols I & III are about $100 each and Vol II is about $50
Another decent book on my list is:
Reptile Medicine and Surgery by Douglas R. Mader, roughly $100
and another:
Herpetology: An Introductory Biology of Amphibians and Reptiles, Second Edition by George R. Zug, et al, about $70
