What we did was use a doorknob hole drill and drill 3 holes on each side, cover with screen (leftover from the window we used for a door) stapled on the outside, then put one of those register vent covers over that.
On another cage we built we just used a HUGE drill bit (the biggest we could find) instead of the paddle style hole drillers and drilled rows and rows of holes in a square pattern, then followed with the screen and vent covers, just because the paddle type bits and the circular bit thingies (that are shaped like a soda can but just the outside ring) kept breaking.
