Suri Husbandry
Ok, since I'm planning on getting a Suri in the very near future (one month or so), I've been poring over husbandry sheets and trying to figure out how to make them work. Here are my thoughts so far (Sorry for the length, I can get long-winded); but first a few considerations
1. I work 12 hr rotating shift work
2. Based on my house and setups, glass acquarium (29 gal / 30x12x12 initially) is all I can do (but I do have a plan to correct that).
3. Roomate controls house thermostat, and keeps house cool (aprox. 60F year round) (definitely NOT my choice)
For Quarantine time (6mos) I plan on using the natural light of the room and 2 UTHs on thermostats and insulation as well as plastic cover to help retain heat and humidity, newspaper for substrate
Once I move the cage into my room I will use a non-heat emitting lamp (do they make those??) for inside the cage (my window is covered and blacked out due to work related day time sleeping), 2 UTHs on thermostats.
Summer temps (March - September)
daytime warm side = 90F
daytime cool side = 80F
nighttime warm = 80F
nighttime cool = 75F
Winter temps (October - February)
daytime warm = 85F
cool = 75F
nighttime warm = 80F
nighttime cool = 70F
After quarantine is over, given that snake gets clean bill of health, I will move the cage into my room, add aspen over newspaper and increase thermostat temps by 5 degrees F to compensate for aspen substrate.
Based on my hours of work, anything less than a 12 hr day is not possible, so I will have to keep it at 12 hrs. 6AM - 6PM day, 6PM - 6AM night.
Obviously I will provide warm/cool side hides and guages as well as hygrometer. Water bowl for young boa should be (from what I've read) 3-4" in diameter. Humidity should be 60% or better (I'm currently maintaining 70% humidity in near identical setup for my BP).
Once the boa and the BP outgrow their current cages I will be upgrading to a double stacked enclosure (insert favorite manufacturer here).
Again, I appologize for the long winded-ness, but I thought I'd lay it out for advice/flameage/thoughts. Thanks!
