I don't wash it....I just spray it and use it. The stuff is great...looks natural...they love to burrow around in it. I don't think it would hurt to wash it...but it has a lot of fine particles and would make a huge mess.
There are reports that some Australian pythons have a mild reaction to it. But it does not effect every snake of that same species. The only case I have ever seen of this first hand is a friend of mine had a pair of water pythons on it. The male was fine....the female kept breaking out with water blisters. When removed and put in a sick tank on newspaper...she would be fine again at next shed and then when put back on cypress....she would break out again.....took a lot of reasearch but I finally found reports of more various pythons (all Australian) having this problem related to cypress....however none were carpet pythons. At any rate....if the problem arises with any species...time to rethink the caging and substrate. I have all kinds of boids, colubrids and pit vipers on it now with no problems.
