hey, i got bit by that bug too......and it bit me hard!!!! pretty much kept it with snakesand a few gecko species.
can i tell you one thing- unless you have a ton of animals- of high quality or morphs, you wont make money.
with housing and feeding, substrates and misc materials- you will likely break even or be under. waaaay under.
no joke- i have 109 animals (some are leaving shortly) and 15 bred this yr- i sold 5 grand in cash, and did about 7 grand in trades (to upgrade my collection)
i spend $1800-$2000 every 3 mos for food (not including crickets and fruits and veggies for my other animals), the electricity bill is out rageous, and i am now re- re changing all my housing to freedom breder and vision caging- thats very costly!!!!!
i wanted this to be my business, but i have to bust my hump 60+ hrs a week to keep my animals. not that i'm complaining- i love it!!!
i guess this is a vent and what to look out for reply. when i got bit by the breeding but, it took a chunk out of me!
anyways may i suggest a few awesome ready to ideas!!!!
crested geckos- beautiful, easy to raise, no heat required- many beautiful morphs to choose from- breeding maniacs. check out crested gecko.com and pmgecko.com- great people, great animals
leopard geckos- flooding the market now, but retaining the high prices for the real beauties!! easy to keep and breed
boa constrictors- takes longer to breed because you have to raise them up, but they are great pets. in moderation- after 4-6 yrs- they will pay for them selves by selling the offspring.
burmese pythons- breed readily, pump out mad eggs, but they are huge and eat like pigs!!!
we also have flying geckos- they are nasty and they bite, but they are beautiful creatures and breed readily!!!!
my brother jacques, my friend mike and my self breed these animals all the time!!!! i do the snakes, my bro, me and mike do the geckos- its fun and extremely rewarding.
i feel sooo good just to see the babies hatch a feeling i want every one to feel!
these animals breed real easily- not much to it at all. for the boid snakes- i suggest "the reprodutive husbandry of pythons and boas" by ross and marzec--- "the boa constrictor manual" by vosjoli, ronne, klingenburge (??), and get the boa breeding video by the man, jeff ronne, aka the boaphile.
i litterally followed what he said in the boa manual and this yr i had over 149 baby boas, and from a few lessons- i had a ton of kings and corns.
real easy to do- just take cAre OF THE ANIMALS!!
good luck
