depends on what kind of blacklight you're talking about. the regular poster type black light you get at the mall or wal-mart can not be used (well, should not be used ) on any herps. over time they do damage the eyes, mainly the retina. the other type, like the kind you get at a herp store, made for reptiles is fine. I recomend the red zoo-med bulbs. you can use them 24-7. also make sure you have a uva'uvb full spectrum bulb with at least CR80. I use reptisun 5.0 with my tegus, they absolutly have to have this, they will eventully die without it.
What kind of tegu are you getting? I love everything in the tupinambus family . there are a lot of misconceptions about them, a lot of shops try to charge people for the wrong tegu. the try to pass off blacks for black and whites (normally $50-$60 more expensive). it is very rare to actully find a black and white in a petstore, most of them are blacks. and there is no such thing as a gold/gold and black. gold/gold and black is actully just a younger black (tupinambus teguixin). the gold will turn white as they grow. Black and whites actuuly hatch out BRIGHT green!
hehe, is RTB tired of me yapping about petstores everytime some brings up tegus yet -Juggalo
