Also, generally speaking, a healthy snake will shed its skin all in one piece, so if the cage is set up with proper humidity and heat, and the snake's in pretty good health, you won't likely notice pieces of skin pealing, it'll all come off in one piece usually.

One thing I've also noticed with my redtails, a week and a half or so before they go into blue (before their eyes cloud over), their scales get a little more dry/rough to the feel. This is especially noticeable on the underbelly. Not everyone may notice it, but its just one of the things I've come to notice as a precursor. Then, within a few days of noticing the scales seem a little dryer, she begins to darken, and then soon, her eyes cloud, etc.
