red tails love to spend much of their time climbed on trees in nature, as an arboreal snake, the feel very comfortable resting on the hands and fingers of their owners(a branch-like structure), if form time to another they feel his substrate its not safe (when you are trying to get the boa off your hands to put it on a flat substrate) the will get very nervous, so they will turn back, or move fastly side to side, trying to grab on a branch for climbing on. this happened to me few times with my little redtail (not so little now). now i just get mi hand, with the snake curled on it into the tank, near a branch or a hiding place and wait until it starts to move on, once it has a part of its body on a safe surface you can take your hand gently or rub its back softly to make it move faster, then you are done.
