hey hey! It does sound like mites.. in the water bowl what they look like are little
black dots, about the same size or a lil' bigger than a period ( . ) appears on the screen.
They are usually black. Another good way to check, is take her out and hold her with
your hands wet, rub her all over and then look at your hands.. usually you will see a few
on your skin if she has them. First thing to do if she does have mites..
get her out of the tank and into a nice warm soak. While she's soaking, clean the
tank, throw away all the substrate, wash all the decorations in a bleach-water solution,
if there are wooden hides or branches, either throw them away, or soak in bleach and
water or bake in the oven for about 20 min (at 200-250 degrees I think, be very careful!!!)
Get some provent-a-mite or other mite treatment and follow the directions OR you can
after the soak use mineral oil to "suffocate" the mites on her.. with many of those
meathods, multiple treatments are needed to kill them all. When you put her back in
the tank, use papertowels as susbtrate until all the mites are gone.. that way it is cheap
and easy to replace often and the mites can't hide in any wood chips, etc.
There are some good write-ups about killing mites with various products under the
caresheets section of this site. I've used seven-dust with good and bad results, and
provent-a-mite with good results.
