Sorry, I have not been able to spend much time online. I am having CHAT withdrawl
First, I believe that the only legal way to ship venomous is in a wooden box with airholes and the top screwed down with many screws shipped via airline cargo. I DO know that it is illegal to ship venomous through carriers such as FedEx, UPS, Airborne Express, or the post office. After 9/11, they are tight and it is not worth the risk to save a few bucks so try it.
About silencing the rattles................... uggh ........................ I probably should not even mention it since it is what smugglers do. But, it is early and I have not had coffee yet, so my judgement is down Oil will muffle the rattles to an extent, but if you have ever got oil on your clothes, you know that it never comes out completely. I am not sure how much comes out with a shed. Secone method is to wrap the rattles in electrical tape. Third method, wrapping a peice of cloth over the rattle and tying it on with string. I had a Timber Rattler come in last year with a string tied around it's rattles. I can only assume why it was there. And it was a pain to get back off.
As a side note on shipping. If an animal is being shipped by a method that is not legal for that animal, they buyer holds just as much responsibility. And if the animal crosses state lines to get to you, it becomes a federal matter
Lori, i am not saying that your friend did anything wrong. It just seemed like a good segway to address some venomous shipping issues
