Right now they roam about a very large room---before they roamed the whole bottom floor of the house.
You have to tegu proof your home---and make sure the animal is large enough not to get under the stove and into places that can cause problems. When the lizard is small, you can let him roam a bathroom that has been checked for escape paths....you can sit on the floor and allow the animal to interact with you.....after a while you can then make the space larger until he gets used to you and walking about.
Some tegus are escape artists---an equal amount are completely satisfied with their surrounding and never try to get out. You have to treat them all the same at first until you get used to their personality.
Remember no one is really an expert.
Bert Langerwerf said something very wise once that I never forgot:
after raisings thousands of tegus for all this time they STILL suprise me. I never understood people who breed for a few years that claim to be experts. None of us are really experts if we really pay attention.
