I always try to by frozen, but they only sell the rat pups live where I get mine. So I put the pup in a plastic Publix bag (grocery bag), Twist it a bit so the rat is just in a small pocket of the bag, grip the bag right above the mouse, and then slam it against a wall. The rat is gone instantly, if there's even a twitch it lasts for like 3 seconds. And I've never had a problem with blood.
Last week when it hit the wall the rat must had his head up weird cus it actually snapped his neck, when I looked in the bag after wacking it his eyes were already closed and there was like not even a tiny little bit of twitching.
I'd suggest this way to anyone who doesn't know/want to try cervical dislocation.
