Ok first off, What are you measuring the temps with? If its not a digital thermometer then dont change anything till you get one. the dial type, and tape thermometers are notoriously very inacurate. if you get the temps to 88 on a dial type your actual temps may be pushing 100.
If its a new snake it will hide allot. let it be for a week or so befor handling.
Soaking yes it COULD be mites. But they also soak with an upcoming shed. or and upcoming dump, or just cuz it feels good.
Best thing you can do is get a digital thermometer and get the temps to 88 degrees on the hot side, the rest should take care of itself. Of course if you are using a digi therm now. You may need to cover part of the top of the tank, if its screen.
Since the snake does soak, when you change the water check for little black specs in the water. If you find any you have mites. Then go to a herp store and get a can of Prevent a Mite, follow the directions to a t and retreat in 14 days and your good to go.
