I use the probe to measure the temps on the hot side of the cage. Run the wire under the substrate and place the probe on top of the substrate on the hot side... leave the main unit sitting on the substrate on the cool side. I typically leave it set to the "outside" temp seeing as that is the more critical of the two readings.
