Well i would gather to guess, that either the common thought of many die due to poor care, and loss of interest when they get big. Another idea is many are in the rescue/ adoption system with no idea of actual age. Or the males were used heavily in breeding programs to multiple females, took off too much wieght due to fasting, from more interest in breeding than eating, and died an early death.

Just a few guesses on my part I may be far off.
