Proper diet is one of the biggest factors in having a proper growth of shell and beak in every turt/tort.
Couple that with good husbandry and there is not too much that will deform a shell, overgrow a beak etc..
For example, up to a few years ago, turts/torts owners were encouraged to feed primarilly dogfood which is extremely high in protien.
This practice caused a miriad of problems in the animals, from overall poor health, appearance, deformed growth in the shells and bones and a very short life span.
An example of way too much protein can be seen in this little turts shell. Look at it and compare it to a normall eastern box turtle.
